11/9/2023 0 Comments Pitch perfect 3 watchJust intonation will give more pleasing chords or double stops because the resonances of the combined notes will be sympathetic to each other. That is because equal temperament isn’t the best intonation for most forms of music. If you listen to any of those instruments being played you will notice a subtle difference in sound depending on whether they are playing chords, single note lines, or with a piano or other fixed equal temperament instrument. However other instruments, fretless strings or wind for example, don’t have the restriction of fixed tuning and so are rarely played using true equal temperament as they are free to avoid the pitfalls in that system. On the piano with its fixed equal temperament tuning that means that all keys sound the same as the intervals between consecutive notes are equal. I know many musicians who don’t have perfect pitch who can recognise a note as being out of tune at the same accuracy that I can. Accuracy of tuning, how many cents away from perfect tuning a person can recognise a note being out of tune, comes down to the individual and their experience. We can both hear if something is out of tune though and I hear exactly the same differences between keys or scales that anyone with good relative pitch does. The only difference between the two is that I can recognise a particular pitch or group of pitches without a known reference point whilst someone with relative pitch cannot. As someone with perfect pitch my recognition of intervals is no better than someone with good relative pitch. That’s not because of perfect versus relative pitch though. The equal temperament tuning has removed those differences. On a modern 12-ET piano no, because there is no difference to hear over and above the change of pitch.
